The Honourable Pierre J. Dalphond

Born in Joliette in 1954, Justice Dalphond has studied at the Seminary of Joliette (classical course), at Lanaudière Cégep (DEC in Sciences), at the University of Montreal (License in Law and a Minor in Chemistry), at Quebec Bar School, and at Oxford University (Masters of Philosophy in Law and Politics).

Called to the Quebec Bar in 1979, he served as a clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1979-1980, first for the Honourable Justice Yves Pratte, and then for the Honourable Justice Julien Chouinard. After working at the Privy Council in Ottawa (1982-1984), he joined the firm of Clarkson Tétrault, which became McCarthy, Tétrault in 1990. There, he practiced from 1984 until 1995 in the areas of civil law, business law, energy law, and administrative and constitutional law.

During the course of his career as a lawyer, Justice Dalphond has held many positions in various professional, social, political and artistic organisations.

Justice Dalphond was appointed to the Superior Court of Quebec in May 1995 where he sat until December 2001. Since January 2002, he sits at the Court of Appeal of Quebec.

Currently, he is the President of the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association. He has been the Chair of the Judicial Appointment Committee (Quebec), a member of the Judicial Independence Committee of the Canadian Judicial Committee, an administrator at the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ) and a member of many committees of the Superior Court, the Quebec Bar, and the Montreal Bar.

Justice Dalphond has written on, and given conferences in Canada and abroad the areas of civil law, business law, judicial ethics, administrative law, and constitutional law.
