Justice is one of the basic components of democracy, and the various judicial institutions, including the Court of Québec, contribute toward maintaining the underlying values.

Our Court is one of the largest judicial institutions in Canada, not only due to the number of judges and this Court's vast jurisdiction but also given the number of cases heard by the members of our Court on a day-to-day basis. Our Court consequently shoulders a weighty responsibility - to ensure that everyone under its jurisdiction has access to justice within a reasonable time frame, in keeping with the rule of law and the ethical principles that all Court judges are required to respect.

Our judges are ever concerned about how to make our institution more efficient; for example, we attach great importance to implementing dispute-settling alternatives. To date, these efforts have proven successful. We are constantly striving to help improve the justice system. We therefore take part, along with Québec's Court of Appeal, Superior Court and Bar Association as well as with Canada's and Québec's Justice Department, in a number of forums for reflection in order to develop ways and means of furthering the cause of greater accessibility to the system of justice.

The Court of Québec's website is one of the many steps in this direction, to make our institution more accessible, by giving our citizens an opportunity to become better acquainted with this Court, to understand its role and how it operates.
